Color laser printers vs. inkjet printers
Laser printers are better for text documents because they produce crisp lines even in very small font sizes. Over time, it's also cheaper to run because you can get more points per dollar spent on toner than inkjet ink. Laser printers also offer faster printing and can save some serious time on large print jobs.
However, laser printers and the toner they use will cost more. If you don't print often, you can buy a cheap inkjet printer - some for $ 30 or less - and it may take longer to complete the initial cost of a laser printer. For small print jobs, laser printer speeds of pages per minute will not be of much use.
Because of how the color toner process works, color laser printers may be a little slower than the equivalent monochrome version. Most color laser printers use a mixture of green, magenta, yellow, and black to create color. They make a pass for each toner color (methods may vary here, but many people use more than one roller), which naturally takes longer.
Although color laser printers are much better at handling images, if you're looking to make prints of accurate color photography to hang on your wall, display in a gallery, or sell to consumers, High Ink-Jet is a photo printer. Still the way to go (or just outsource the work in the photo lab). In addition to print quality, inkjet photo printers can handle a wide variety of paper types and sizes compared to laser printers. The color laser printer will handle in-line photos and graphics in fine-grained documents.
Do color laser printers come with Wi-Fi or Air Print?
Yes. Like inkjet printers, wireless communication has become very common on color laser printers. However, not every model will support every brand of wireless printing tech. The above-mentioned HL-3170CDW supports both Apple AirPrint and Google Cloud Print, for example, while the Dell C1760NW does not, although it still offers mobile printing through its own proprietary app.
How do I print from my iPad, iPhone, or Android device?
It depends on the wireless features of your printer. Many printers today support Apple Air Print, which makes it easier to print from your Wi-Fi network member or iPhone to a printer. Not all apps support AirPrint, but many do.
On Android, Google Cloud Print will allow you to print any document stored in your Google Drive, or directly from documents and sheets such as Google Apps. Like AirPrint, a printer that supports Cloud Print is required.
If your printer doesn't support Cloud Print or AirPrint but has Wi-Fi, your printer maker may offer its own iOS and Android app for printing from your mobile device.
How often do I have to buy toner?
It depends on how much you print. Toner cartridges often produce 2,000 pages or more (check the features of your own printer for the specific output of your model). For mild home use, that means many people can easily go a year or more away without replacing the toner. For office use replacement, the replacement interval will be shorter, but the toner can still last for a few months.
How can I save money on toner?
The first step is to print efficiently. That is, double-check your page layout settings and make sure everything is OK before hitting the Print button.
When it's time to rearrange, you can save money by buying third-party toner cartridges. A single genuine toner cartridge for the Brother HL-L8360CDW costs about $ 78, while a collection of black and color toners (four in one cartridge) from AZ Ink costs about 66. The possibility of buying a third-party toner is not suggested by your printer manufacturer, but it should work fine as long as you make sure it is compatible with your printer. However, some printers, such as the HP model mentioned above, look for a toner that uses a special chip that identifies it as the original material. HP warns that while some other cartridges may work today, they may not work in the future.
Can I buy a color laser printer with built-in fax?
Yes. Many in-one laser printers, such as the HP LaserJet Pro M281fdw above, can scan, copy and fax documents. Note that not all - also called multi-function printers - have fax modems, so be sure to check the specs before purchasing.
How do we test?
In order to find the best color laser printers, we work on quality with speed, price, maintenance costs, and any unique features that help them to compete.
Our elections are based on our long and short term testing. Experience with the first model; Familiarity with companies' technologies; Consult with industry experts, fellow journalists, and consumers; Online forums Lab results; And other third party reviews. We look at this board - not just our own experiences - to get a consensus on what we think are the best performing printers you can buy right now. We value it. Also consider list prices to see if they are worth the price. We'll even recommend printers that aren't new, provided the features are still at their best.
The printer market is constantly evolving, with manufacturers introducing better models with either new features or basic upgrades. So you can expect our choices to change as well. But don't worry - the model you're looking at will be with you for a while, and if we expect a better model on the horizon, we'll tell you whether you should decide right now or Should wait
