Exactly, what makes a photo printer?
Real photo printers, unlike standard inkjets, which manufacturers only call photo printers, fall into two broad categories at the user level: dedicated photo printers and closely dedicated ones.
As the name suggests, dedicated (also known as "small-format") photo printers are designed to print nothing but photos. You cannot use them to output documents, as they do not accept letter-sized paper stock. They are limited to snapshot sizes, with a maximum paper size of 2 by 3 inches, 4 by 6 inches, or 5 by 7 inches (or similar variations in these sizes).
But the definition of a printer in this category is not limited to its limitations. These printers are relatively small and portable. In addition to emphasizing ease of use, they are also much less computer-centric printers than standalone consumer electronics products.

Do you print in black and white?
With most printer categories, you should consider whether you really need color. Photo printers turn the question on its head, so you should consider whether you need black and white, which many printers can't handle well.
The most common error in black and white printing is a tint or different colored tints that are displayed in different shades of gray. If you print black and white photos, you need to check the color photo quality of the printer as well as the black and white photo quality. This is a problem for most dedicated, rather than dedicated, photo printers, but you need to consider it in any case. (In our reviews, we note such signals and their severity when we encounter them, but we do not use monochrome images to test small-format printers.)
Do you also need a photo printer?
There is no such thing as a dedicated or closely dedicated photo printer, but some dedicated photo printers add functions beyond printing. (That said, many inkjet-based home and office have great images printed; see our guide to our best printers for our top-of-the-line printers.) Most include menus with basic editing features. Remove a photo field, red-eye, and the like that allow you. Some include many editing options that are primarily home photo kiosks, often with a large touch screen to let you order easily. Models like these often add features such as the ability to scan slides and film negation. Some include enough device memory to store hundreds of photos, so you can bring a printer with you, display photos, and print them on the spot. Some dedicated photo printers are even made into other types of devices such as cameras.
