The first thing you will notice if you are looking for laser printers are the companies that are doing them no favors to the companies that make them. All the printers we have been identified by Arkan product numbers instead of branding. What is the difference between L8360D and M281fdw? Only a product manager will know.
There is a dearth of printer models. For each level of functionality and price, vendors have four or five models with slightly different model numbers, and prices vary from 20 to 50, each closer to the same. There are some minor differences compared to the same siblings. Worse still, Amazon lists the new printers in 2011 as a model (which I found).
Equipment can be a big problem with laser printers, especially at the bottom. Most printers come with a starter toner cartridge that will print a few hundred to a few thousand pages. Then you have to buy cartridges, which can be quite expensive. Many popular printers can also use market toner cartridges after discounts, which can save you money but reduce print quality or damage your printer. We haven't tested toner cartridges, so pay close attention to user reviews when making purchasing decisions.
We looked at printers that generally fall into three categories: enterprise printers, workgroup printers, and small / home business printers. Enterprise printers are characterized by their high cost, large trays of paper, and special features such as folding, stapling, and enterprise integration.
Workgroup printers are also fast and have a lot of capacity, but they drop significantly in price compared to their enterprise brethren. We usually choose workgroup printers that are capable of printing hundreds of thousands of pages per month.
Small business/home business printers are usually fast but are usually limited to about 250 sheets in a paper magazine. These are less expensive printers, but they often have replacement costs for cartridges that come close to the printer's actual purchase price. In choosing small printers, be sure to look at the cost of the cartridge as well as the purchase price.
Also, I want to point out that prices are very contradictory and change regularly. In the middle of this week, when I initially selected the products and put them online in this article, the prices of some of them also changed. If you're interested in a product, check out the various vendors and maybe wait a minute. Prices may be lower (or they may be refundable). Jupiter is careful.
Our process
We started with a list of over 50 printers suggested by followers, colleagues, other reviewers, and IT managers. We had to limit it to a list of 14. With one or two exceptions (especially our editors' favorites), we are exclusively listing the 2019 model (2020 models are not available at the time of publication). One of our editors' favorites is the 2018 model, but the reason is that it stands the test of time and is very popular.
Although we were not able to test hands-on with these printers, we did create customer satisfaction. In all cases, we saw and read customer ratings and reviews. Specifically, looking for comments that significantly disable a printer (e.g., many users complain of cracks or failures for a given model).
